{about me}

I grew up in Towson, MD just north of Baltimore. While studying mathematics at the University of Maryland - College Park, I became fascinated with computational biology thanks to chaos guru Jim Yorke. Jim gave me an opportunity to research genome assembly algorithms and I was hooked. I earned a BSc in mathematics (2006) and continued at Maryland, completing my PhD in applied mathematics & scientific computation in 2010.

Now I live in Baltimore's historic Fells Point area and am working at the Institute for Genome Sciences. I have two younger sisters, one working as a high-end fashion PR rep in Manhattan, the other traveling the country as a singer/songwriter (www.emmawhitemusic.com). Safe to say we're all pursuing our dreams. Outside of science I enjoy playing guitar, sailing, travel, and fitness.
